Of those who have offered an opinion thus far, 3 are in favour of lift and 2 are against (assumption in giZmo's case.) 2 remain to opine.

Its been a year and a half.. Might be ok to give him a chance with a 6 month probation period..

So you were 13/14 when this happened? I guess most people at that age are pretty immature, and don't often comprehend the full meaning of certain remarks/symbols/etc. I agree with the lift, and 6 months probation.
