Hi everyone!

Since I finished my HellbenderWorld (was about time) I started working on a new project. This time not Race but Assault. It will be looking like something between AS-Glacier/DM-Reconstruct/DM-Sateca/DM-1on1-Incuvasion. For this purpose I would like to make a poll. If you had to pick two of the Maps listed above, which ones would it be? I also would like to know which one is your favorite Assault map overall and especially why (the map doesnt have to be on this server).

I dislike vehicle centric assault. I prefer classic style such as Protocore or Cimerion.

I like Hera because as you said there is a bit of everything, but also because there is not only one way to get an objective, alternate roads being a secondary objective or not. I also like the mix between few vehicles and ground battles. Also areas are not too small and it's not too spammy (contrary to Scrapmetal)... Globally, I like maps involving vehicles be they an objective or a mean to reach an objective.

voted for Junkyard mainly, and Robotfactory as there wasnt any other suitable option.

Junkyard offers a unique playstyle and tons of tactical elements aswell as various traps (barrels, car crusher,..), that allow you to kill the vehicle regardless of its HP. No other map comes close to this kind of gameplay. Also there are alot of possible trickjumps, which make the map kind of perfect.
The problem with the map (and why its probably not popular on the server) is, that most people playing there have probably never finished the single player and/or tutorial of the game, else they would know the map and what to do there.

However, there are 2 problems with the map on the server: First one being officially allowing to use the bug, that lets you finish the 3rd hellbender objective "from behind", without using the magnet or the way through the carcrusher/deemer place. Second problem is the anti-shieldrun mutator. Attackers cannot use the jumppad to get the powercore while using the shieldgun at the same time, since the mutator stops you from double jumping in midair while using the shield...


Robotfactory's first and second objective can be done without using the tanks, which is what I prefer to do. In general, vehicle-heavy AS is kind of bad, especially considering the tons of new players on the server. Why would they bother learning proper movement, when they can just step into a vehicle and drive (in mario kart fashion) straight to the finish line?

The other maps on your list can be alot of fun, but they all got some flaws in my opinion:
Gasoline - too many vehicles, but shooting people out of their scorpions is alot of fun, although its too easy usually.
Subrosa - with a small playercount the map is really good, but with 10+ people its way too much spam. I usually throw 1-2 grenades into the direction of the objective and already get 1-3 kills for no effort at all, not that much fun.
Hera's first objective is tedious, doing the same objective 4 times in a row...if the jumppad for the attackers was available earlier, it could be better probably. the rest of the map is decent though.

But there are 2 more maps I consider super good:

AS-UglyAssault - although its a bit spammy with lots of players, with 8-10 players the map is alot of fun. Socio told me the map was removed from the server because of a bug on one of the first objectives, but I have never seen this happen at all. I consider this map alot of fun cause there are no vehicles, except for that one objective, and the mapstyle is rather simple than too complex. Also the objective design is what I consider really great.

AS-Utopia is another example of a great AS map in my opinion, as there are no vehicles at all and the wide areas encourage people to learn proper movement if they dont want to easily get killed. Only problem with the map is the lack of spawnprotection in form of sentinels. Spawnkilling is easily possible here. The general atmosphere of the map is also cool.

However, as uglyassault got removed and junkyard/utopia almost never get voted (except for today), and as there are about 5 RACE maps within the AS maplist (such as pathwaynative, pharaosraceway,...), the only AS maps most people know are the default maps for the server, mercury,poseidon,pierons, gasoline. Those are fun, no doubt, but not what I consider "the best".

@Robot: If I had to choose between "Vehicles only" and "without any Vehicles", I would always pick the map without vehicles like you. But I think a Map that can be played entirely without vehicles which has one or two vehicles as support anyway is even better.

@Izumo:

@bono: Yea, Hera is a quite popular Map here on ldg. I would like it too if the graphics were better. Imo by the looks its the worst of all Socios maps (excluding Gaso). Mercury, Scrap and Poseidon look so much better. I think he mixed too many themes in that one (Arborea/Humanoid/Mechtech/etc).

@Tehnix: Yea Junkyard is my favorite too due to the reasons you mentioned. Its Gameplay offers so much variety with the traps and high mobility with the jumppads. And it looks pretty good too considering its very open and has an excellent performance. But I also dislike how the glitches are handled here but thats a general problem as in how admins treat the rules. I see people blocking objectives with vehicles on Gaso or ramming vehicles with the Raptor everytime its being played but both arent allowed by the server rules. The shieldrunning is afaik just a Aza problem. He probably got mad one day cause he couldnt kill some Deus doing an objective and decided to nerf it so its better for him, but thats how he is - only changing things in his favor and not for the community.

The bug on uglyassault is the door at the attackers spawn. It sometimes gets blocked and stops moving(which could easily be fixed by a few clicks, but whatever). However, the Map itself becomes extremly hard when there are a lot of players involved (especiall that recovering holdobjective). Utopia is fine, but too hitscan based imo. anything but the lg and shock are quite useless on this map.

This is Cimerion exactly ^^

As for other maps, I just don't find it fun trying to defend an objective and getting annihilated repeatedly by Hellbender skymines or Goliath shells. They one hit kill you all the time and it's just not fun to play.

It's a shame we don't have UT3 style tanks where they barely do any splash damage and most of the damage is impact, aimed at damaging vehicles and nodes.

Cimerion has one Vehicle (Atlas) which is absolutely useless in that map. I know a few people like Cimerion but tbh it doesnt suprise me that its not that popular since a mirrored floorplan for almost the entire map in Assault is just so so bad. I dont wanna start talking about the graphics, lets just say TheCanyon is literally 10 times better.

What I rather ment are Maps like Glacier, Junkyard, Poseidon, Hera, Mercury, ScrapMetal (Socio is pretty good at that) for example. You could do the Maps by foot (as in they are not overscaled if there were no Vehicles) but there are a couple of Vehicles involved.
ScrapMetal has so much potential if only the interior would be more open and the Bio removed entirely from the map.

And yea, even though UT3 sucks in general it has a couple of good things in it.

It's a pity that the UT3 vehicle ports are so poor in texturing. Could really use them.

I see there is no option for a map without vehicles. I guess he knows that such maps never see play and doesn't want to waste his time. Muh vehicles or muh spam are necessities on LDG with the race playerbase.

I would have thought a level designer of his immeasurable and divine skill would be able to pull off making a played standard assault map...
