When meeting a clutch of enemies, I go for a pineapple and am left standing there with a sandbag. It's embarrasing.

Can the sandbag be moved to a separate key, such as Weapon Special or the new Melee key?

Sand bags *might* be moving to a new weapon as an auxiliary function of it.
