Re: UT2004 Grail
Lots of gems buried in there. Some help a lot more than others though.
These ones probably aren't relevant:
* TCP network tweaks: because UT uses UDP.
* netspeed: LDG seems to default to 20000 already (I have a hotkey to reduce it to 12800 if the internet seems crap sometimes).
I recommend testing all tweaks offline, where possible, because the performance degradation of playing on LDG far outweighs anything else. The intermittent lag many of us get here is mainly due to either our own ISPs or general european/OVH network issues. And I'm not sure this BW mod likes AMD cards very much either!
If anyone wants my personal document about configuring for performance gaming, just PM me.

The higher the netspeed, the higher the framerate. LDG defaults at 20000 speed.

Re: UT2004 Grail
That's not a cause/effect thing though. I assume it's because the netcode and rendering are on the same single thread in this old game. The GPU+CPU can only achieve the fps they are capable of.Calypto wrote:The higher the netspeed, the higher the framerate.
However, there is a separate mechanism where frame rates above 85 fps are only unlocked if the netspeed is over 10000. That's another reason I have a hotkey for "netspeed 12800", so I can get the benefit of my 120Hz video mode on other servers where their default netspeed is still down at 5800.

Re: UT2004 Grail
20000 netspeed is enforced at login (if your original settings was at least 9500), due to ut2004 menu is only able to set max 10000. Reducing it to lower value is placebo - I'm sure your network has no problems with 20 kB/sec at a steady rate in 2015, rather the limitation is (and that set the 10 kB / sec originally) the CPU performance when doing the compressions / decompressions in a single thread with >40 clients on the server.

OK, I was always lowering netspeed out of hope on this server, so thx for clarifying that.Izumo wrote:Reducing it to lower value is placebo - I'm sure your network has no problems with 20 kB/sec at a steady rate in 2015, rather the limitation is (and that set the 10 kB / sec originally) the CPU performance when doing the compressions / decompressions in a single thread with >40 clients on the server.
That must be the reason why using forced skins seems to help. I just force my own team skins, because it's still useful to know which enemy person I'm battling.

Re: UT2004 Grail
i wonder if anyone has ever experienced an odd issue with ut2004 perforformances: a lot of times when a "new" sound is played during a match, i have like a 0.5 sec skip of fps, as if the hd has a very high latency, problem is it happens only with ut
obviously nobody has ever had the same problem, so i have no idea what to do

Mute the sound
Try updating the sound drivers and ensuring your PC has good ventilation and isn't dusty. Sound failures are common with overheating motherboards.

Somehow this topic reminds me, when somebody posts on public site some puzzle and math problem, and all the responses they get are "omg check your grammar " ...
