The nanosword was developed as the 'super' melee weapon, per se. Which means in vanilla it completely overpowers all other melee weapons. The correct tactic for using the sword is indeed run forward and hold down left mouse.

Though on a more serious tone, since it looks like the melee damage of all weapons has been substantially boosted, you'll probably want to use the blade in guerrilla warfare. I'd agree with those that say this is a 'skilled' weapon, since you're effectively giving up a primary weapon for a slightly better melee option.
