Muting for chat offenses [split topic]

So to propel this towards a solution, I'll put forward my stance upon the matter:

I accept iRobot's proposal to mute players for most chat offenses. This would apply to racism, sexism and homophobia but not Nazism. Any existing bans based upon chat offenses would be commuted to mutes.

With respect to mutes, I will also put forward a proposal to for mute durations to be double the previous duration after 30 days.

With such a system, it would have to be decided whether bans and mutes would use the same stage or a separate stage.

@Hamish: Nope. That held in cases where a player was banned in the old UTAN system for hacking.

Did we not have a case recently where four people were perma-banned for making a reverse swastika with scorpions? I know of at least 2 of them who are playing again with a new key.

If the stance has changed since then, fair enough.

3 of them are still banned. 1 of them was let off because, as I understand it, he'd been allowed back under a new key and the administrator who made the mistake was unwilling to reban him. :/

I also prefer the idea of muting for chat offenses rather than banning right away. If the muted player is still a nuisance while playing, like ramming other people or teamkilling, which happened before, he can be banned.

wow a sensible voice in here! muting should be done infact if im allowed back..... id like to be muted because the bans in here on chat related offences are clearly just dependent on the mood of the admin

I certainly would not mute for racism but ban right away there. Muting would be for something that is lesser (foreign language, annoyance, spam etc.)

Surely it depends on the degree. "Get the fuck out of my hellbender you black monkey" would warrant a ban, where as the aforementioned "what's up nigga" is not really racism.

Hmm, from the "wat" topic in appeals

If you let people join the server and go "whats up my nigga's" without harm, then calling people nigger's is only one degree away from that, and people won't see the difference between the two.

So I'm with gizmo here.

If I went in work tomorrow and said to my boss, "what's up nigga", I'd be without a job very quickly.

As you said, "what's up nigga" is still unacceptable.

I would ban for racism in any way no matter what was said or what it was meant to. The word "nigga" is bad itself, its an pejorative and ethnic slur and there is no need to say it.
