Gaming Notebooks - Discussion/Reviews/Suggestion

Post by Takeo » Sun 12 Feb , 2012 10:56 pm

Hey guys!

Two months have passed now since I thought of replacing my desktop pc with a notebook. I decided to do so but am (like most people) not quite sure about the model. I know for sure that dell notebooks have the best processing and workmanship but I don't like the design of Alienware notebooks and the xps systems are not really what i'm looking for ;). I heared that acer has some good notebooks and also read about the clevo + xmg (darn expensive).

---------- My favorite at this moment:
XMG A501 ADVANCED Gaming Notebook 39,6cm (15.6")
• 39,6 cm (15.6") Full-HD (1920*1080) Non Glare
• NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M 2048MB DDR3
• Intel Core i7-2670QM - 2,20 - 3,10GHz 6MB
• 16GB (2x8192) SO-DIMM DDR3 RAM 1333MHz
• 320GB SATA-II 7200U/Min Seagate Momentus 7200.4 (ST9320423AS)
• DVD SATA Multinorm Burner
• Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 (incl. Bluetooth)

Price: 1.108,00 €
----------
The maximum I want to pay for a notebook is 1300 €.
Apart from the technical specs I am looking for (since I'm flexible in that point), what brand or even model would you recommend and of course why?

Just out of interest, why would you want to use a notebook when a desktop PC gives far more bang for buck?

I myself have DELL Vostro 3750, version with 4 GB RAM, GeForce 525M GPU and dual-core procesor (it's 17.3"), though it's primarily a work machine. I'm so far pretty much satisfied with DELL, no issues so far, screen is far better than on my old HP and it's very confortable to work with. I myself require matte display, which reduces the choices by 90%.

What I would look on is battery life (that is support for HybridSLI in your case). And I myself would check all versions: I don't think you'll really need quadcore CPU and 16 GB RAM (would pick dualcore with 4 - 8 GB). In case of Dell Vostro 3750 the price difference save for "what I considered redundant" was around 200€. Also 320 GB HDD isn't very much :P

btw. you know that GT 555M doesn't seem to perform very well; having rough eye on the benchmarks it performs similarly to GeForce 8800 GTX. It's performance is less than 50% of my desktop GPU, Radeon 6870 (which isn't top of the line).

My little brother is also looking for a laptop, but not necessarily to play. What I've seen so far is that Dell and MSI do good whereas Acer and Packard-Bell are to be avoided. Of course there are exceptions... But you should look at MSI laptops, they do good configurations for gamers.
Also look at the weight, it can get quickly heavy.

@Aza: I bought a laptop for gaming 4 years ago because I wanted to play recent games and being able to take it with me wherever I could go. Maybe it's the same for Takeo ;)
Its all about the game, and how you play it
All about control, and if you can take it
All about your debt, and if you can payit
Its all about pain and whos gonna make it...

My favorite laptop is the Alienware Aurora;
Intel® Core™ i7-3960X (Six Core Extreme, 15MB Cache) Overclocked up to 4.2Ghz
16GB Q DDR3 SDRAM at 1600Mhz - 4 DIMMS
2000GB SATA hard drive (7200RPM)

I'm sorry but this is not a laptop... I'm curious to know how many tons it weights... Oh 20kg in your face . Also the price for Alienware PCs... :( . For this one, you will have to pay the modest price of 3000€. np. :ugeek:

3960Xes cost something like 1000 quid and very few people need that kind of power.
